Battling colorism
Raising awareness
A local rapper hopes to address discrimination based on skin color by raising awareness about his own experience through his latest song.
A Walvis Bay based rapper, Eduardo “Wardo” Cotton released a new single titled “Bruin Man” with the aim of raising awareness about and putting an end to colorism.
He dedicated the song which features R&B singer John-Raymond “John Ray” Cupido, to addressing the issue of discrimination based on skin colour and intends to raise awareness on colorism with it. Colorism is defined as differential treatment based on skin color, especially favouritism toward those with a lighter skin tone and mistreatment or exclusion of those with a darker skin tone, typically among those of the same racial group or ethnicity.
“Bruin Man” was released on 25 February 2022 and is available on YouTube.
“I created this song solely from my point of view as being a so called “coloured”. Most of us can relate to always being labelled by others because of the color of their skin. This song rectifies what I am and who I am as a person,” explained Wardo.
Plans are already afoot to shoot the music video for the song and Wardo says that he hopes to involve a lot of people in the exercise.
The rapper is currently putting songs together with John Ray for an EP titled “Gebroke Vel Kleur” which means broken skin color. The EP is scheduled to be released this year.
“The EP is to inspire people from different walks of life, while at the same time catering for the entertainment sector. I’m working with legends like Graniez, one of the best artists in Namibia, John Ray the voice behind all of my songs and lastly Lance who’s the most poetic artist I know. The music coming from us for this year is going to be breath taking,” said Wardo.
He plans to take his music across the borders of Namibia to reach an even bigger audience and advises fellow artists and friends, never to give up.
“Do not give up on yourself, not even when situations seem hopeless. You are more than what other people think of you”.
