Now in its 34th year, Namibia's annual Swakopmund FNB Sandman triathlon will take place on 5 December at the Swakopmund Mole with last year’s winners returning.

Over 330 participants are expected to take part in this year’s FNB Sandman triathlon with online entries closing today, race organiser Yvonne Brinkmann of OTB Sport has said.
Participants can choose between the ultra (1.9 km swim, followed by a 90 km cycle and then a 21.1 km run), standard (1 km/40 km/10 km), sprint (450 m/20 km/3 km) and mini distance (150 m/6 km/3 km).
Gordon Pokolo of FNB, the main sponsor, said the bank’s investment started about 14 years ago, and it has been good. “We are extremely happy to be part of this event,” he added.
Returning again to this year’s event is last year’s winner, South African ultra-athlete Konrad Marais. Marais said he takes part in the triathlon as it is the only event where he can relieve his stress after a long year at the office.
He said the biggest challenge of the triathlon is the wind. However, he added that if you are fit, you can enjoy the race with one year’s preparation.
Marais further advised those who are interested in the triathlon to just start. “The best athlete in the world said that it doesn’t get easier, only faster. If you have a desire to start, just get into it.”
Another winner from last year, Karin Brockman (ladies masters), shared Marais’s sentiments saying that the wind is quite a challenge, as is the swimming, as you have to get certain aspects right.
