Be your own hero
Something powerful happens inside of us when we gather up the courage to change.
Henriette Lamprecht – Everyone absolutely has it in them to change at any point in their lives no matter what change it is they need to make. Humans are incredible. Sometimes we just forget how truly incredible we actually are.
“The two most indestructible things on this earth are the Nokia 3310 and the Human Spirit,” says speaker, wordsmith and fitness awareness creator Hermien Elago.
Since seeing triple digits on her scale seven years ago in September 2013, she embarked on a journey which would not only see the digits shrink, but her stepping in her own light and power.
“As I looked at the number, I thought to myself ‘what if went against every negative word that had been spoke over me? What if I gathered up the courage to change? And what would happen if this time I started, and I didn’t stop?’”
And so she did. She admits it has been a wild ride, but she stayed the course for seven years “because I am worth fighting for”.
The greatest difference between Hermien of 2013 and the Hermien of today is she’s learned to stand in her light and in her power, she says.
“Something powerful happens inside of us when we gather up the courage to change, we awaken a very brave part of ourselves.”
Now she shows up for herself and for her life, says Hermien.
“I will never quit on myself again.”
Her journey started by making small sustainable changes she knew she could maintain. She would walk for 45 minutes, three days a week. Minor changes were made to the way she prepared her food, opting for slightly healthier options.
“Those changes, though small, created the foundation for lasting habits. And it is our habits that carry us.”
The hardest thing was definitely facing the shame of getting up after every fall, she admits.
“I have been very vocal and transparent about my journey; the highs and the lows. It’s easy to show up and share the highs but I knew it was more important to embrace and also share the lows.”
Because it’s in rising from the lows that character is built, Hermien emphasises and today she celebrates every part of the journey – the victories as well as the falls.
“They all matter and they all make the journey worthwhile.”
There has been more than one time she wanted to give up, but she doesn’t, even if she falters, she says.
“Firstly, I know where I have come from. I know what it feels like when my quality of life is limited and I don’t plan on going back there. Secondly, I know where I’m headed. I am doing this for 80 year old Hermien because right now, I’m all she’s got!”
Her advice is to make small changes that will develop into lasting habits.
“Be your own hero because Superman is not coming to save you. No one in this world should believe in you more than you believe in yourself.
Eat well 80-90% of the time, show up for your workouts (find something that you actually enjoy doing). And this one is underrated – sleep!”
Her motivation is the fact that when she continues showing up for herself, when she keeps doing the things that help people overcome their own limiting beliefs, the world is a little better as a result.
“And no matter what challenges and obstacles I encounter, I appreciate them for moulding my character and making me better for having faced them.” – [email protected], @hermienelago
