Celebrating culture and heritage
To commemorate the Namibian heritage week, the national heritage and culture programmes office in Hardap region hosted a first ever debating and quiz competition for the year 2017.
Such an event was never hosted in the whole of Namibia; where learners get together to debate on culture issues, the importance of culture, influence of social media on culture, globalization influence on culture and preservation of culture in the fast growing world in terms of technology.
The topic focused on was social media, cultural norms and values. The quiz took place on the 19th of September and the debate on the 20th of September at the directorate of education hall.
The debating competition attracted learners from the 4 local high schools namely Danie Joubert Combined school (grade 8, 9 and 10 learners), Empelheim JSS, Mariental Gymnasuim Private School and Mariental SSS, while the quiz competiton attracted the learners from the 4 local primary schools namely, Danie Joubert CS (grade 6-7 learners), D D. #Guibeb PS, Mariental PS and Sonop PS a total number of 28 learners took part in these competitions.
The heritage week activities were attended by close to 150 community members, learners and staff members of different line ministries.
“We thank all the sponsors who came on board to assist us in this essential dissemination of cultural practices to the young; without the sponsors the event would not have been possible.”
The deputy director of lifelong learning Ms Eises-Thanises in her remarks stated the importance of culture as follow: culture is a certain set of customs, ideas and special behavior of a group of people in a certain society- food arts forms, habits norms and values religion language, etc. She also stated that a person without culture is like a house without a solid foundation. The audience and participants were urged to uphold their cultures and work hard to preserve them for the future generation. She further stated that there is no superior and inferior culture.
“We would never have group life without culture.”
She concluded by stating that it is our responsibility individually and collectively to protect our cultural heritage.
