Hanekom regains Omeya club honours
Today the club will host the first-ever Els for Autism event.
Last weekend Omeya Golf Club held its annual club championships. The weekend was a huge success and a comfortable field of 61 players took on the gruelling medal format.
Francois Hanekom was victorious in the men's division, outplaying Dan Zwiebel and Ernie Wessels by 10 strokes. Hanekom regained the title won by Justinus van der Westhuyzen last year.
Adri Pienaar successfully defended her ladies title, with Michael Thom being crowned the new junior champion.
Omeya Golf Club would like to express its sincere gratitude to the following sponsors: The Hilton, Global Golf, Acushnet and Finsure Bluestar and Namibian Beauty for their generous sponsorships to ensure that yet another five-star event could be delivered to its loyal members.
• Omeya Golf Club sets the pace yet again when it hosts the first-ever Els for Autism Golf Day today.
Most fans would know that the South African golf legend's son Ben is autistic and through this the Els for Autism Foundation was established in 2009 by Ernie and Liezl Els to focus on the issue of autism. Els for Autism thus aims to provide families across the globe with best practice interventions and support.
In early January 2011, Ernie and Liezl Els embarked on a goal to create a service that would allow lower-resourced families of children on the spectrum in South Africa with free access to effective treatment. By participating in today's event each participant is indirectly contributing to this cause.
The format of the day is a betterball stableford with a massive field of 38 teams entered to support the Els for Autism initiative. Winners on the day will qualify for the final at Highland Gate to be played on 15 and 16 November. Winners at Highland Gate will qualify to participate in the SA Open Pro-Am to be played at the Glendower Golf Club.
Play will be followed by dinner and an auction with exciting golf and rugby memorabilia.
RONEL ELS TAKE TOP POINTS AT RÖSSMUND
The fourth qualifier for women's golfers for the 2017 Windhoek Lager Green Jacket was played at the Rössmund course last Saturday.
Since their arrival on the Swakopmund horizon, the BON Hotel Group and The Dome sports centre offered for the first time a most welcome sponsorship to the golfing community at the coast and in particular ladies golf.
With some fantastic vouchers on offer a small field of ladies attacked the fairways at Rössmund. Several ladies who are in the running to represent Namibia in the final to be played in Windhoek from 22- 24 June travelled to the coast to take part.
Despite the adverse east wind conditions the ladies were determined to go after the valuable points on offer towards the 2017 Windhoek Lager Green Jacket Challenge. Play commenced at around 07:30 in good weather conditions – however as the morning progressed so the conditions and the golf heated up.
The stableford winners were rewarded with BON Hotel accommodation vouchers: first Ronel Els 39 points; second Rina Knight 34; third Wilma van der Merwe 33; fourth Jane Liebenberg 32 points (count-out winner over Zelda Nel).
Nearest to the pin prizes were on offer compliments of The Dome – Health & Wellness Centre. These went to Marina Loubser on hole nr. 3; Wilma van der Merwe hole nr. 7 and Sylvia Hengari hole nr. 12.
A great day was had by all and a big word of thanks to Dave and Dean for the fantastic prizes and their support which was greatly appreciated by all.
WINDHOEK LAGER MEDAL CHAMPIONSHIP
The third round of the Windhoek Lager Monthly Medley was played at the Windhoek Golf and Country Club last Saturday.
The players enjoyed a course that is in the best condition it has been in years. Strategic and at some times sneaky course setup made scoring challenging, but the players grabbed the proverbial bull by the horns to carve out some good scores.
At the end of the day it was George Vink that made the best of the conditions to score an excellent net score of 67.
The winners on the day were:
