The human race: Doomed to become fossils?
DR. AC OBHOLZER WRITES:
From the careless “zol” (smoke) which caused the Dordabis farms inferno, to Zuma triggering arson in KwaZulu Natal/Gauteng, and the belching coal fired chimneys of Eskom and Sasol on the South African Highveld, Southern Africa is contributing to the global climate crises.
We are also now in the season when old grass is set alight, in spring, to stimulate growth of green grass. This is a dangerous tradition.
A red sunset may be beautiful, but is a symptom of pollution, smoke and dust.
More people (7 plus billion), more consumption, more waste, more pollution, more global warming, more extreme climate change, more poverty and starvation, more Covid-19, more economic refugees, more conflict and socio-economic distress (especially for the vulnerable – the elderly and mothers/children).
Has planet earth reached its safe carrying capacity? Air, water and land is polluted. Is it sustainable?
Two thirds of the land mass and three quarters of the population of earth is North of the equator. China, India, the Arabian Gulf states, the European Union and the USA are the main industrialized polluters. Fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) are the main energy driven polluters – carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and soot particles.
We are smothering earth with a hothouse blanket of atmospheric gasses. The result is extreme climate – floods, hurricanes, drought, forest fires (the Amazon are the the lungs of the earth). Polar ice is melting, leading to a rise in sea levels, threatening low lying countries and cities.
The planet is on fire and has fever.
If we fail to plan, and change direction, away from fossil fuel dependence to renewable energy sources, we are doomed to also become fossils. We share the same air and sea North and South of the equator.
Namibia has a population density of three per square kilometer, but two thirds of the country is desert or semi-desert. Our ecology is very fragile.
The Paris climate accord is an attempt, through international cooperation, to reverse the “poisoning” of our planet, before it is too late.
Mother nature is not forgiving, if we abuse her.
We are entering the fourth industrial revolution. We can measure, what we are doing to planet earth, but we need the will and discipline to change for the common good.
We need smaller and better, father present families. We need security, functional literacy, primary health care, employment, housing and a purpose in life.
Ignorance, poverty and disease becomes a vicious downward spiral.
Walk more, cycle to work and invest in Vision 2030.
Mankind is at the top of the creation/evolutionary ladder and has the responsibility to be the guardian/caretaker of our common shared home – planet earth.
Change to code green.
Aluta Continua Victoria e Certa.
