The Namibian under-17 women’s team faltered against Zambia in their opening match at the Region 5 Youth Games in Maseru, Lesotho.

Namibia put up a brave fight but Zambia was more organised in attack, scoring two goals through Blessing Zulu and Grasius Tagiloshi, ending the match with a 2-0 scoreline. The match was initially meant to be played on Saturday, but due to a waterlogged pitch it was moved to the next day.

Head coach Frederick Sitali was impressed with the way the Namibian team played, but said that they will work on some areas ahead of the next match against Botswana.

He added that they will put up a fight in that match, which was scheduled for late afternoon yesterday.

The group stages only have Namibia, Botswana and Zambia as other countries pulled out of the competition.

Learning curve

On Saturday, Namibian boxer Ammon Kuume lost against a South African opponent Booi Moyisi in the preliminaries via unanimous decision. Kuume said his opponent had more power, but added that he’s taking every bout as a learning curve.

Before going to print, another Namibian boxer, Alfeus Modino, was scheduled to face Lebo Sekwaipe of Botswana.

Volleyball and tennis action were also scheduled but results were not available before going to print. The final scores will, however, be available on Sport Wrap’s Facebook page.

Meanwhile, swimming will commence today, with Namibia being represented by five athletes.
