Witvlei event drew huge field of riders
The competition has been set up nicely for the next race on 14 April.
The Witvlei Enduro recently held at Farm Omakwara signals the traditional start of the motocross enduro season and drew a whopping 94 entries across six classes.
The rains held out and the race was a hot and dusty affair. The fast and flowing tracks offered up some exciting racing nevertheless.
The winner of last year's event Marcel Henle (KTM) made it two in a row as he roared to his first win of the season in the Open Class. Henner Rusch (KTM) managed to salvage a second position despite having a poor starting position and struggling with rear brake issues for most of the race.
Local boy Kai Hennes (KTM) finished in third position. Duard Wiese (Husqvarna) and Sigi Pack (KTM) rounded out the top five.
The Senior Bikes class was won by Ingo Waldschmidt (KTM). Returning after a two-year absence from the sport Waldschmidt put in a dominant performance to win the class by more than 14 minutes. He will surely be the man to beat in this class for riders older than 38 years.
Werner Wiese (KTM) put in a fine performance to finish second, beating third placed 2017 champion Jörn Greiter (KTM) by a mere 15 seconds after close to four hours of racing. Rounding out the top five was Martin Kruger (KTM) and Ronald Geiger in fourth and fifth positions respectively.
The biggest class of the weekend with 32 entries was the Support Bikes. Phillip Baard (KTM) showed his sand riding skills as the rider from Walvis Bay won the class by more than eight minutes.
Newcomer Oliver Rohrmueller finished in a fine second position beating third place and 2017 champion Jurgen Gladis (KTM). Gladis will surely have his work cut out for him if he wants to make it a hat-trick of championships in the Support class. Finishing in fourth and fifth positions were Holger Barth and Jaco Husselman.
The Rookie Class was won by former Quad class champion JL Opperman, with Juan van As finishing a close second. These two young guns will surely be battling for most of the season judging by their speed and consistency.
Third place went to Rhys Cragg aboard another KTM. Axel Foerster and André Marais rounded out the top five.
The Novice class for bikes under 65cc was won by Dylan Hilfiker, with André Barnard and Zoe Waldschmidt finishing in second and third places respectively.
The next race will be held on 14 April at Farm Lichtenstein south of Windhoek. The fast Witvlei race track will be in stark contrast to the rocky mountainous terrain of Lichtenstein.
It is among the toughest tracks on the calendar, where Henner Rusch will be out to prove that the defeat at Witvlei was only a fluke, as he and Marcel Henle will resume their fight for overall spoils.
