Double victories for Old Boys and Tigers

Windhoek High School Old Boys Cricket Club 1 and CCD Tigers 1 bagged their first points in Cricket Namibia’s one-day Premier League competition for the 2022-2023 season by beating the MR24/7 Welwitschias 1 and Trustco United 1 respectively on Saturday in Windhoek.

At the Vegkop Stadium, the Welwitschias elected to bat first, but the coastal outfit found the going tough and were bowled out in 33.5 overs for 139 runs with 97 balls to spare.

Herman van Zyl batted superbly at number four with 47 runs (30 balls, 2x4, 5x6) for the Welwitschias, followed by the opening batter, Tawanda Ngwenya (22), Jaco Le Roux (19) and Simon Shikongo (13).

Old Boys gave the visitors 17 extra runs, but Melrich Robyn took 3 wickets for 28 runs in 5 overs, while Malan Kruger (2/28 in 6), Dian Jacobs (2/6 in 3.5, 1 empty), Zhivago Groenewaldt (1/5 in 5, 2 empty) and Henry van Wyk (1/13 in 2) contributed as well.

The opening pair of Old Boys (2/141) Shaun Fouché and Malan Kruger laid a solid foundation for the host. Fouché got caught on 31 runs (20 balls, 3x4, 3x6) while Kruger batted undefeated to the end (65*, 34 b, 10x4, 3x6) with JW Visagie (22*, 9 b, 3x6), who concluded the encounter with a six to the off side border for an eight wicket victory in 10.3 overs with 237 to spare.

Markus Haihambo (1/33 in 1) took the only wicket for the Welwitschias, while captain JP Kotzé was run out by Van Zyl and Le Roux.

Superb

At the Tigers’ lair in Pionierspark, United got defeated by 7 wickets when they were bowled out for 147 runs in 42.4 overs. Hendrik van der Walt with 28 runs, Chris Freeman (27), Damon Coetzee (27*), Henry Hayes (25) and Christian Schumacher (16) reached double figures for United.

Norbert Manyande (4/20 in 8.5, 2 empty), Mauritius Ngupita (2/27 in 10, 2 empty), Quincy Beukes (2/32 in 10) and Takunda Matimbe (2/37 in 7) bowled superbly for CCD.

The Tigers' batters did not waste time to chase the winning target (148 runs), reaching it in 34.5 overs. Manyande wacked 11 fours to the boundary rope for his 66 runs (93 b), followed by Joshuan Julius with 47 (73 b, 6x4) to reach 148/3 for victory. Ryan Moffet (21) also contributed to their score line.

United’s best bowler, Chris Freeman (2/19 in 10), bowled 4 empty overs but only got support from Stefan Bezuidenhout (1/23 in 7.5, 1 empty).

T20

Yesterday morning the four clubs met for the T20 Premier League competition at the same venues. Tigers (96/4 in 11) beat United (93/7 in 12) by 6 wickets.

Old Boys (104/6 in 13) beat the Welwitschias (98/9 in 20) by 4 wickets.
