Ongos edge closer to Stars

Ongos FC are now just one point behind the log leaders as the final five matches of the season.
The defending champions African Stars FC would have been quietly hoping that Tigers do them a favour by beating Ongos FC, in order to give them breathing space at the top of the Debmarine Namibia Premier League table.
Ongos however showed their fighting spirit and placed themselves in a good position after beating Tigers by a solitary goal at the Independence Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Vetaapi Tomo scored the winning goal after 49 minutes thanks to an assist provided by Simon Elago.
Coach Agnus Elemu of Ongos FC praised his players for winning the match they had in hand.
“It is now a good position to be in, because we have made sure that we can now be closer to the log leaders.
“I am proud of the players that have really come to the party after a few difficult days.
“We are well-placed in the title race and every match from now will be crucial,” Elemu said.
The result brought Ongos to 52 points after 25 games, while African Stars are hanging on to their top position with 53 points obtained from 25 matches.
Khomas Nampol (51), Ongos FC (52) and African Stars on 53 are all in contention to be crowned as league champions.
NEXT FIXTURES
All these teams face tough opponents in their bid to lift the 2023/24 Debmarine Namibia Premiership trophy.
The NPFL goes on a break for two weekends due to Independence Day and the Nedbank Newspaper Cup, but the remaining fixtures in April will be both both intriguing and decisive.
African Stars’ last five matches include a game against rivals Orlando Pirates who are fighting relegation.
Stars will then battle Okahandja United who have been in decent form this season in Windhoek, before hosting Blue Waters.
The defending champions will then take a trip to Gobabis to face another traditional rival Young African FC.
Title contenders Ongos FC on the other hand host Young African before playing away to relegation-threatened Okakarara Young Warriors.
They will also travel to Rundu to battle another relegation-threatened opponent, Julinho FC, before returning home to face Orlando Pirates and African Stars in their last two matches.
If both African Stars and Ongos FC win their remaining four matches regardless of what Khomas Nampol do, it will set up a grand finale as the two top team face off on the final day of the season.
Khomas Nampol FC would however still fancy their chances of sneaking through the backdoor and steal the title from the two favourites given their final matches.
The police team will host Young Brazilians, before battling Unam FC in Windhoek.
They will then travel to Otjiwarongo to battle bottom team Life Fighters, before closing off the season with matches against Tigers and Civics FC.
