Action-Packed Sports Week Ahead
Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Henties Bay
It’s a busy week in terms of sports events at the Coast.
Kicking off the week on Thursday is the Sparta Touch Rugby Tournament, set to be hosted in Henties Bay.
Organizer Morne Schloms explains that they already have ten teams set to compete in the tournament.
“This year, we are only going up to 16 teams, so it’s first come, first served. Team registration starts that morning from 07:00 to 07:30, and then the games should start around 09:00. Miss Touchies will also be on again this year, as it is every year.”
Reigning champions for the tournament are Die Gasbottels.
Also happening on the same day is the annual Angling Bonanza, also in Henties Bay, set to attract avid anglers to catch the biggest fish of the day and pocket the cash prize of N$20,000.
The 2023 champion was the colossal 23.150 kg Kablejou, a whopping 4.955kg heavier catch than the previous year, caught by Chantel Mitton.
On Friday, the Pupkewitz Jetty Mile is set for the afternoon. The competition will start at 15:30 at Tiger Reef Beach Bar. The Start Sprint will kick off at 16:30 at The Mole, whereas the Kiddies Fun Event will commence at 17:00 at The Mole.
This is a nautical mile or 1,850 meters length race. Ten-time Jetty Mile champion Phillip Seidler will also be in action and hopes to clinch his 11th title this year.
On Saturday, at the Walvis Bay Oval Track, the Weskus 4x4 vasbyt action will take place. Organizer Theuns van Zyl explained that the action will kick off at 08:00 in the morning.
“The action of the day will include one obstacle after another! We aim to finish around 10:00, and there will be a ten-stage obstacle course, including the much-anticipated mud course.”
He added that, thus far, they have about 15 entries, of which three are from South Africa.
And finally, the SFC Annual Xmas Christmas Cup is set to take place on 27 and 29 December this year. Two divisions will be catered for: the social (11-a-side) and 40 (7-a-side).
