The annual Erongo School Sports Regional Olympics will take place at the prestigious Venita sports field in Swakopmund on 19 August.

The finest young talents from schools across the region will gather and compete in soccer, netball, basketball, and volleyball at the event - which is known for fostering sportsmanship, teamwork, and healthy competition.

According to Given Gowaseb, the chairperson of Erongo School Sports, the Regional Olympics will be an unforgettable showcase of youth talent. “We expect to have around 480 learners participating and ten teams per zone. The boys and girls u/13, 15, and 17 teams from Daures, Karibib, Omaruru, Swakopmund, and Walvis Bay have been diligently preparing themselves, fine-tuning strategies, and honing their skills for what is anticipated to be a fierce yet friendly contest on the playing fields”.

Soccer enthusiasts are in for a treat with a number of gripping matches and teams displaying their agility, precision, and teamwork on the pitch. Netball fans can look forward to encounters with players showcasing their speed and strategic prowess on the court.

Basketball enthusiasts will witness high-flying action with teams vying for supremacy, and volleyball lovers can expect fast-paced rallies and powerful spikes as athletes battle it out at the net.

Gowaseb encouraged sports lovers to come out and support the athletes. He also encouraged the participating athletes to give their best. “The regional team will be selected to play in the upcoming National Debmarine Championship scheduled for the first week of October.”

Beyond the competitive aspect, the Annual Regional School Olympics is a celebration of camaraderie and unity among schools in the region. “It provides an opportunity for learners to bond, forge new friendships, and learn valuable life lessons through sports. It always leaves an indelible mark on all those involved,” Gowaseb concluded.
