Jaw-dropping performances
A well-known singing group from the coast never ceases to amaze their audience with their vocals.
Swakopmund Acapella Singers was established in Rehoboth in 2010.
A family boy band called Brothers In Christ was recognized as a church group. The following year, the second branch of members was established at Khorixas. The majority of the group members completed their education and went to study at Swakopmund and Windhoek in the following years. The third branch was eventually established in Swakopmund in 2015.
Stage name
"As a stage name, we adopted Swakopmund Acapella Singers, but as a church choir, we remain Brothers In Christ," explains Titage Uiseb, the choir's chairperson. "This was done to attract more sponsors and allow the group of vocalists to perform outside the church."
Swakopmund Acapella Singers performs gospel, African traditional hymns, folk songs, choral, a capella, and various covers from all over the world. The 12-member choir practices twice a week because practice makes perfect. “We perform every night at Ocean Cellars and Brewer and Butcher, the Strand hotel restaurants.” They also entertain guests on cruise ships, at gala dinners, weddings, birthday parties, business gatherings, and during township tours.
The group has four songwriters responsible for composing the majority of the songs.
So far, the group's highlight of the year has been the album they recorded in December at Nautilus Studios at Swakopmund's MTC Dome. "This is a ten-track album called Rainfalls, and we're getting ready to release it soon."
Vocals
Uiseb has been a member of the group since 2010. "We recruit, develop, and prepare our members for the workforce because this is a generational group. We have scouting programs seeking out talented individuals who have completed high school but are unemployed. Our members are aged between 14 to 40 years and there are no membership costs to join."
Four members of the ensemble have extensive musical training and put their knowledge to use during rehearsals. Uiseb advises singers who have strained or lost their voices to consider taking supplements for cracked voices, available in pharmacies. “We have a tradition in the group of adding honey and citrus lemon to boiled water and drinking it.”
