CLOF keeps containers coming

Volumes have grown year-on-year
Namibia has the top global container liners calling at Namibia's port all the time as a result of continued efforts by the Container Liner Operators Forum.

Thanks to Container Liner Operators Forum (CLOF), and its close cooperation with other stakeholders in the local logistics industry, major container liners keep using the port of Walvis Bay as a gateway for its products to and from southern Africa.

CLOF is an association whose membership consists of representatives of all container shipping lines calling and servicing the port of Walvis Bay directly. Its current members includes CMA CGM, Maersk, MSC, COSCO, and MACS Lines.

According to CLOF chairman, Amando Legner (who is also the managing director of CMA CGM), the forum was established in 2010 to promote and maintain the interests of its members and to pro-actively influence strategic decision-making in respect of capacity-creation and service-delivery in the Namibian container supply chain.

“It provides a forum for its members to meet and discuss matters of common interest concerning the operation, facilities, and related functions of the Namibian container supply chain,” he told NMH Erongo, adding that it also creates a collaborative space with port authorities, terminal operators, transport authorities, government departments and any other organizations to ensure the efficient operation of the Namibian container supply chain.

Legner highlighted the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns as the greatest challenge for all stakeholders across the supply chain in recent history.

“Despite the many challenges across the industry, container volumes have grown year-on-year through the port of Walvis Bay thanks to an increase in transshipment as well as cross-border volume,” he said, adding that this comes as a direct result of the continued commitment, versatility, and hard work by all stakeholders in helping to create an enabling environment allowing for the unhindered flow of trade and cargo through our port and corridor."

He said that connectivity to global markets is a key requirement to positioning Namibia as the preferred logistics hub for Southern Africa and CLOF remains fully committed to contribute towards realizing this national objective.
