Equipping learners for educational success
Better grades
The shortcomings of the schooling system prompted two teachers to open an academy with the purpose of providing an improved educational experience for learners at the coast.
Qualified teachers Marcell and Jacques Bezuidenhout founded and opened Phonix Academy on 4 April 2022.
The duo said they noticed various shortcomings of the schooling system because of the overpopulation in a classroom, the piles of work to be done before a set of time, and loads of admin one should do. “We wanted a personal, interactive learning experience for learners.”
The academy uses the latest technology, teaching skills, and methods to provide the best education experience. “Currently, we have 13 homeschooling spaces left, and we can accommodate 84 support/extra class learners a day. No specific requirements are needed to join the academy, only the willpower to want to get better grades."
The academy is affiliated with the homeschooling association. It is a learner support system centre based in Swakopmund at the Platz am Meer mall that helps learners reach their full potential by helping with reading and grammar as well as mathematical classes, memory improvement, and one-on-one tutoring. Phonix Learners offers educational services for students aged 6 to 18, providing individualised attention.
The academy operates between 08:00 to 13:00 and also offers support classes/extras classes that vary in price. These include language classes; mathematical classes and one-on-one classes/tutoring.
Marcell and Jacques explained that they chose the venue for its calming effect brought by the presence of the ocean and for the parents’ convenience. “We are isolated, accessible, and located in a quiet part of the mall.”
The academy also hosts events to encourage social interactions between students and provide additional support for reading, spelling, mathematics, and memory improvement.

Equipping learners to rise from the ashes of their educational failures by getting better grades is one of the main aims and objectives of the academy. “This is why we have the Phoenix on the door - to symbolise rising out of ashes. We would like the learners to feel that after a session with us, they have gained the knowledge that can help them can rise to any occasion,” says Marcell, who has a bachelor of education grade in foundation education and an honours degree in support learning - with eight years of educational experience.
Jacques is the directing manager of the academy and completed his degree in business studies and entrepreneurship. He later did his Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). The two complement each other well, with Marcell assisting the younger learners and Jacques the older learners.
Marcell explains that remedial is not only for physical or mental disabilities. "It is a one-on-one session where you and the learners can positively interact with each other to explain work to reach the required grade needed.
The success achieved by learners is measured and based on monthly reports of what the learner accomplished during their sessions and their inner happiness when they understand the work or want to know more.
