A group of 26 players has been invited to attend trials for the u/19 Erongo Newspaper Cup team on the morning of 4 June at the Vineta Stadium in Swakopmund.
Omaruru is represented by seven players in the called-up squad, followed by Swakopmund with six players, Walvis Bay Urban with four players, and Daures with three players. Arandis, Karibib, and Walvis Bay Rural have two players each in the called-up squad.
“The selected players were born in 2003, and some turned 16 by 1 January of this year. They were chosen at the 2022 Governor’s Cup event held in Swakopmund,” explained Charles Muuka, the chairperson of the Erongo Netball Association. The Swakopmund and Omaruru constituencies went head to head in the netball final. Swakopmund set the pace and dominated throughout the match to win with a final score of 52-29.
According to Muuka, a final team consisting of 12 players plus three reserves will be selected - with Charlane Minnaar as the team manager. “The selected team will represent the region and compete in the Newspaper Cup tournament scheduled from 26 to 28 August in Oshakati. Therefore, only those available for the event should attend the trials.”
Transport, accommodation, and meals will be provided for those players that need it - courtesy of the region. “Players partaking in the trials should bring along a certified copy (no older than three months) of their full birth certificate. Players are requested to come dressed in white with appropriate netball gear and bring a water bottle for personal use,” Muukwa emphasised.
