Erongo’s got talent
First-ever show
This is a chance for the youth of Erongo to showcase their talents.
The Erongo Got Talent show, which will be hosted at Coastal High School hall on 27 and 28 May, will accommodate three categories, namely singing, dancing, and acting.
Sem Amuthitu and Simon Parata of Chameleon Arts n Entertainment - a team of visual artists, musicians, and producers - founded this initiative to motivate and offer exposure to talented persons aged 12 to 25 years. "We aim to identify capable youth and provide a platform for those with hidden talents to showcase them. With this talent exhibition, we intend to develop ingenuity and establish a lifelong path for our youngsters," explained Parata.
Hopeful candidates had to submit short videos of them singing, dancing, or acting. According to the organisers, they received several videos. "There is no doubt that the region has a lot of talent. We received 14 videos in the signing category, 10 in the dance category, and three auditions for the acting category."
Due to the limited amount of video entries, the duo could not complete the finalist selection process and decided to push the deadline back to 20 May. "This was to allow prospective artists more time to send in their videos. The selected finalists were subsequently informed who they are on 23 May," Parata said. The organisers are hoping to bring on two judges per category. "We are searching for people with a lot of experience in the respective competition categories."
There are prizes of N$1 000 for first place, N$600 for second place, and N$400 for third place in each category. Participants will also receive certificates after the event as motivation to continue developing their skills.
The duo also has plans to collaborate with creative and youth development activities such as public craftsmanship shows to aid the youth.
"The aim here is to empower them to earn a small amount of money for stationery and other necessities. It is past time we start supporting our kids on their career paths. Through talent shows, we can steer them away from depression, drugs, and other illegal activities. You will not know what hidden gem you have in your house until you see it sparkling in the limelight on stage."
Parata encouraged all young people and parents to show up in large numbers to support the participants and enjoy their talents.
