The fishing area for the second edition of the Dunes Mall annual Fishing Competition – scheduled for 28 May – will be from Myl 14 to the Paaltjies/Sandwich Harbour border.
Fishing action will commence at 05:30 and conclude with the closing of the scales at 15:00. Weigh-ins for the competition will be done at Dunes Mall, with lucky draw prizes worth N$15 000 up for grabs.
The fish categories include cob, steenbras, galjoen and dassie.
“There will be great prizes for the heaviest fish caught in each category. Anglers will fish along the coast for various fish species, and the top three heaviest fish weighed in will win,” said Simen Andersen, chairman of the Namibia Surf Angling Association (NSAA).
He added that the goal of the fishing competition is to “draw feet to Dunes Mall”, as well as to raise funds for the Namibian Masters Angling team, who will compete against the President’s angling team from South Africa in October.
Interested anglers can purchase angling tickets for N$100 at Dunes Mall or from various outlets to be announced in due course.
Andersen urged interested anglers to take part in the competition.
“The prizes on offer are an adequate incentive to come and try your luck while contributing to a good cause at the same time.”
There will also be a volleyball competition in addition to the fishing competition. This event targets corporate and social volleyball teams – limited to six players per team, of whom two must be female. Fun prizes will be up for grabs.
Entertainment
Entertainment for children will include jumping castles, giant Jenga and checkers games, face painting, balloon folding, and much more.
The first annual Dunes Mall fishing competition concluded on a high note, with Fillemon Gomes emerging as the day’s biggest winner. He went home with a Suzuki M-Z 450 motorbike. Gomes, who hails from Walvis Bay, caught his lucky fish near Sara se Gat, a fishing spot near Henties Bay, using white mussel as bait.

The 14 dassies managed to secure N$450, the four kabeljou fetched N$550, and the three steenbras N$550. The eight galjoen were auctioned for N$3 000. The galjoen were given back for auction twice and managed to raise an additional N$3 100 and N$2 200.
