Grumpy's fishing report.
The water was quite rough and the wind quite strong south westerly with the full moon this past weekend. This made for tricky fishing but still some nice galjoen were pulled onto the beach.
It also looks like the berg winds will hit the coastal towns again this weekend. Although I welcome the warmth, it’s the sand storm that one has to be careful of. But after the sandy winds subside it should be a nice warm calm day. This could also mean that Longbeach might produce some excellent galjoen catches.
Riku Mans headed off to Grys Duintjie in search of some sharks. He fished with a mullet head and got stuck into a fat spotty. After a quick photo he released the shark to fight another day. Nice fish Riku.
The spotties put up a real good fight and tests your tackle properly. Good baits to use would be mullet and galjoen, and other sharks you can target with mackerel heads. Handle the sharks carefully and you should have lots of fun.
Some pan sized kob were also caught at mile 6 this past weekend. Ruan Engelbrecht got his kob on sardine fillet. He said the fish tasted delicious. He fired it in garlic butter and fresh herbs.
The ski boats were relatively calm this weekend due to the high swell. They will get their chance this week as the swell is much better.
Some shad were also caught in the pump station area close to Swakopmund. These fish have sharp teeth so handle with care. They are actually game fish and can be caught on bait or with artificial lures. They also taste very delicious to eat.
Speaking about gamefish, our snoek run should start in September. Snoek can also be caught on bait, usually pike is used. But the easier way to catch them is on a “bokstang” which is fact a 16oz lead tube. One lets the handline sink to say about 25 metres and then the lure is being pulled up at a rapid rate and the snoek chases the lure. A handline is used as it is the quickest way to bring the fish into the ski boats. Snoek is a commercial fish hence its all about catching them as fast as possible. It is also a super delicious fish to braai.
The tour operators are getting some fish along our coast but they said the fishing was a bit tough this past week. They managed to scratched some fish together for the clients. Trappies was the chosen areas and they got some kob, blacktail and galjoen in those areas.
Tight lines!
