The annual Squash Club Championships are taking place in Swakopmund from 18 to 20 August, with some of the best players in the country expected to compete.
According to the organiser, Kate Düvel, many new members have been recruited during this year, and so the tournament promises to be exciting. "Members will be fighting hard for club positions, as it will have a direct influence on national positions," she told Erongo 24/7, adding that "big guns" including Devon Savage (the winner of the Pupkewitz Open) and Brandon Grane (currently ceded number two in Namibia) will be pushing to see who’s the best.
There are also seasoned players like Wilko Aschenborn; Torben Winterbach; Ferdi Malherbe; Arno Kok; Rudi Koekemoer and Wynand Labuschagne. A couple of strong ladies including Judy Savage, who clinched the top spot at the Namibian Nationals hosted at SFC in June; Charne Fourie; Tessa Rossouw; and Sumari Jans will also be creating a competitive atmosphere, while "determined and enthusiastic" juniors Kai Düvel; Ole Steinsträter; Charldon Fourie; Daniel de Wet; Jason Kolb and many others will be thrashing it out for official club rankings.
Düvel said everyone is welcome to join and watch brilliant squash. "Squash fans will be treated to some extremely fierce matches and upset results. The entree fee is N$200 per player and includes access to a barbeque on 20 August. Players can enter the competition via TeamApp or WhatsApp (081 434 5058). A cash bar and warm snacks will also be available under the marquee at SFC squash courts."
