From historic prison to relaxing oasis

Die Dam Resort, located at the Tilda Viljoen Dam on the outskirts of Gobabis, is an example of foresight and commitment.

Once an abandoned prison in the early 20th century, the site has been transformed into a premier destination for relaxation and adventure, thanks to the hard work and creativity of its owners, who purchased the property in 2001.

“When we bought the place, it was merely remnants of an old prison with walls marked by graffiti and a history long forgotten," said owner and resort manager Zandra Labuschagne. “People would come here to braai and fish, but it lacked any real infrastructure or appeal.”

Undeterred by the site’s state of disrepair, the owners envisioned a welcoming retreat that would be in harmony with the area's natural beauty.

Since then, Die Dam Resort has become a beloved getaway spot.

Overnight visitors can choose from 14 grass-roofed chalets, including two VIP options for a touch of added luxury. The chalets range from double-story family options to cosy single-bed units, catering to a variety of needs.

Three tented camps, well-equipped camping sites with private amenities, and a large scenic bar area complete the resort's impressive offerings.

At Die Dam Resort, travellers can unwind while enjoying a Namibian sunset from the deck, with the shimmering dam providing a stunning backdrop. Whether enjoying a quiet retreat or making memories with family and friends, visitors will find the historic site transformed; a place that proudly showcases the beauty of the area.

Die Dam Resort has truly grown from its roots as an almost forgotten place to become a cherished haven that welcomes visitors from all walks of life.
