JUST IN: UNESCO hosts talks on Headspring's uranium mining plans in Stampriet

Jemima Beukes
JUST IN: UNESCO is hosting a feedback session today near Mariental to discuss the impacts of uranium mining in the Stampriet Transboundary Aquifer System.

Political and traditional leaders, senior government officials and representatives of Headspring Investments, a subsidiary of Uranium One, are attending the session. Headspring Investments plans to use the in situ leaching (ISL) method for uranium mining within the basin.

This comes after the government's announcement in May that it would approach UNESCO and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to address concerns about uranium mining in the area.
