Herman Matthew: Midwife

Herman Matthew works with multidisciplinary health system personnel - mostly doctors and social workers - to care for expectant moms and assist them to have a pleasant pregnancy experience.

He is one of the few men who defies preconceptions in order to pursue his passion for caring for others.

His role as a registered nurse in antenatal care – also known as a midwife - is to help people prepare for a healthy childbirth by enforcing safe health practices during pregnancy. In labour rooms, his role is to monitor the mother's and the unborn baby's well-being in order to rule out any abnormalities and take any required steps.

“In the puerperium (the period following childbirth), my goal is to foster a strong emotional bond between the mother and her child through mother and baby-friendly activities,” he said.

He added that soft skills such as emotional intelligence are valued in nursing because it is such a diverse job. “You must be ready to retain any important information. You must also have strong time management skills because most services must be provided at a specific time to get the best outcomes.”
