Seventeen-year-old Benjamin Hendrickse, born and raised in Windhoek, is the national record holder for the junior high jump.
His regular training sessions include a mix of strength and cardio exercises designed to build the power and endurance necessary for high-level competition.
"Specific drills are practiced to perfect the jump approach, take-off, and bar clearance," Hendrickse said.
Visualisation
Mental preparation is equally crucial. "Visualisation plays a critical role in mental preparation," Hendrickse explained.
"I often watch videos of my past performances to analyse and improve my technique."
By reviewing his jumps, he can identify areas for improvement and reinforce positive habits. Visualisation also helps him mentally rehearse each jump, making him more comfortable and prepared for competition.
"Staying focused, quiet, taking deep breaths, and visualising each jump in my mind is essential for each jump," he said, underscoring the mental discipline required to succeed in the sport.

In the weeks leading up to a major competition, Hendrickse adjusts his routine to maintain peak fitness. He cuts back on sugary products and focuses on fine-tuning his performance.
"As a major competition approaches, my training sessions increase two to three times a week," he noted. This increased frequency allows him to perfect his technique and ensure he is in top condition.
"Stretching after each session is for recovery and helps prevent soreness the next day," he stressed.
Major competition
Although Hendrickse will be too old for the next Youth Olympics, his sights are set on the Junior U/20 Championships.
"The journey ahead is challenging, but with dedication and hard work, anything is possible," he stated confidently. His focus has shifted to qualifying for this event, displaying his effort to advance in the sport.
