Namibian Basketball Federation president: Nigel Mubita

A federation president leads and manages the activities of a sports federation, focusing on the strategic development and promotion of the sport at all levels.

Nigel Mubita exemplifies these responsibilities as the president of the Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF).

Mubita’s passion for the sport started late in his teens. “I started playing basketball in 1996 at Concordia college and found my passion there," he recalls.



Background

His commitment to the sport saw him play for the University of Namibia (Unam) Running Rebels, where he made the first team in his first year and won the championship in 1999.

Mubita's educational background complements his leadership skills. He holds a bachelor's degree in accounting, which provided him with a solid foundation in analytical thinking and problem-solving.

"I fell out of love with accounting in my final year of school and moved into the investment sector. This shift led me to become the head dealer at a company in the stockbroking sector," he says.

"My background has helped me approach challenges in basketball administration with a structured and solution-orientated mindset."



Leadership

Mubita's leadership journey in basketball administration began in 2018 when he joined the leadership of the Khomas Basketball Association.

Recognising a gap at the national level, he stepped up in 2020 to become the president of the NBF. "We saw there was a big void, and that's when we stepped up to the plate," he explains.

As the federation president, his role involves creating and implementing strategies to develop basketball in Namibia.

He emphasises the importance of patience, emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills.

"You need to be patient, soft yet hard, and emotionally intelligent.[...] 'soft' meaning listening to people's problems and helping to solve them quickly and effectively. However, you also need to be 'hard' because some people complain without cause. Balancing empathy with firmness requires true emotional intelligence."

His role requires balancing the needs and concerns of various stakeholders, from primary school kids to veteran players, to ensure that the sport remains inclusive and accessible.



Commitment

Mubita also underscores the significance of staying connected with international basketball bodies like FIBA Africa and FIBA World.

"Being in touch with the international market is crucial," he notes. This connection has enabled Namibia to access funding and equipment, although challenges like releasing basketballs stuck at the airport highlight the ongoing hurdles.

Mubita's career as federation president is marked by his dedication to basketball and his strategic vision for the sport's growth in Namibia.

His leadership, problem-solving skills and commitment to community development offer valuable insights for aspiring sports administrators.
