Juné van der Walt (30) is a photographer who focuses mainly on weddings, although she does other types of photography as well.

“My work is 100% inspired by your story, your connection, your love, and how it all comes together,” she says.

Van der Walt is a qualified teacher with no formal degree in photography, but this hasn't hampered her from making a living from photography. While it is possible and informative to obtain a diploma or degree in photography, this is often not the path that most photographers take.

Those with a love for beautiful scenes and intimate moments, as Van der Walt describes it, are often drawn to the camera. “It takes an eye for detail and good timing to take quality photos.”

Van der Walt, who has been in the industry for over ten years, explains that her favourite thing about being a photographer is “hearing a vision, documenting it, and bringing it to life."

She stressed that creativity, attention to detail, and passion are of utmost importance.

An important aspect of photography is social media marketing.



Marketing is crucial

Using platforms such as Instagram and Facebook is essential for a photographer to build their brand and promote their work to attract clients.

Wedding photography is not the only option for professional photographers – couples photoshoots or even just a single subject are also possible. Headshots for actors, professional business photos, nature photography, or even war photography are options for making a living.

“People will always want to capture the important moments and they can’t do that and experience the moment at the same time,” she says. That is why photographers will always be necessary.
