Antonio Tchivanda's tennis triumph

From Swakopmund's courts to International arenas
Swakopmund's Antonio Tchivanda is making waves in the tennis world at the age of 17. With his early start and unwavering dedication, Tchivanda is quickly rising through the ranks, proving that passion and perseverance can turn dreams into reality.
Swakopmund scholar, Antonio Tchivanda is steadily gaining recognition in the tennis world. Originally from Angola but raised in Namibia, the 17-year-old is creating a name for himself in the international tennis world. His journey from a young tennis enthusiast to a semi-professional player is marked by hard work, support, and a deep passion for the sport.

The young man's interest for the sport started at a very young age. "I began playing tennis when I was about six or seven years old," he says.

What started off as a casual interest in the sport and nothing more than a fitness activity shortly became a more professional and competitive hobby at the age of 11. Tchivanda mentions that his family played a significant role in shaping his tennis career as both his mother and grandfather were avid tennis fans, and their enthusiasm for the sport inspired him to pursue it with greater commitment. “It’s kind of a family thing, only I’m taking it to a professional level,” he boasts.

One of the aspects he enjoys most about tennis is the challenge it presents. "I love how demanding tennis is," he explains. "It requires both physical and mental effort. Competing at an international level feels like this is what I am meant to do." His passion for the sport is evident in his approach to training and competition.

Achievements and Challenges

At just the age of 17, Tchivanda has already made significant strides in his tennis career, where he recently participated in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournament. During this tournament he competed against various international players putting his skill and ability through great tests.

He successfully defeated two of his international opponents in the singles division from the United States of America as well as Mozambique. However he also faced a loss against an Australian opponent following a match with the opponent from the USA. "It was a tough but very much needed competition but I was able to make a comeback and secure a win in a doubles match, which was a positive outcome," he shares. In the doubles category, he walked away with a win against his Angolan opponents. "Winning matches against competitors from different countries is a major accomplishment for me," he says.

This young tennis player's success story is not without a few obstacles which has made his tennis career more challenging to take on. Being a Swakopmund resident and a scholar at Westside High School, required frequent travelling to Windhoek, due to limited facilities that hindered his training sessions. "Traveling often can be challenging," he admits. "It means missing school and other activities and the lack of local support can be tough as well."

Despite these challenges, he remains focused on enhancing his game. "Playing at this level is mentally demanding, especially when you're away from your team, but I’m dedicated to improving."

Balancing Interests

Outside of tennis, Tchivanda possesses a creative skill set on top of his already identified tennis skills. He mentions that drawing is an activity which calms him down and allows him to express himself creatively and when he is not playing tennis he ventures into his creativity. "Tennis occupies most of my time, but I enjoy drawing when I have the opportunity," he says. Drawing provides him with a way to relax and take a break from the severe demands of training.

Looking ahead, Tchivanda has clear objectives for his future. "I aspire to play college tennis, potentially in the USA or Germany," he states. "I am also interested in pursuing a business career in the future." For now, his immediate goal is to continue refining his tennis skills and participating in more ITF tournaments. "I’ve set goals for myself and am committed to achieving them," he says.

Motivating Others

Tchivanda’s story is a testament to dedication and hard work. He encourages his peers to go for their dreams, "Pursuing your dreams requires perseverance and resilience. Challenges are part of the journey, but staying focused on your goals and believing in yourself can lead to success. Embrace the journey, learn from each experience, and keep pushing forward."

His story highlights the power of dedication and the impact of supportive family and community. As he continues to work hard and chase his tennis dreams, Tchivanda is on a promising road which reflects his commitment and passion for the sport.
