De Duine rugby players heading to SA
Young athletes to represent Namibia
Three learners selected to participate in two prestigious rugby tournaments in South Africa needs the help of the local community.
The Grant Khomo Rugby Week, named after the legendary South African rugby administrator and former player Grant Khomo, is organized by the South African Rugby Union (SARU). This tournament is a vital platform for identifying and nurturing young rugby talent across the country and beyond.
The selection process for the Grant Khomo Rugby involves scouting and selecting talented young players through regional trials. These trials include matches and training sessions, with the best players advancing to national trials. Following training camps and evaluations, the final team is chosen to represent Namibia at the tournament.
About 60 learners from across the Erongo region participated in the trials to qualify for the Erongo under-16 rugby team. Among those selected are three learners from De Duine Secondary School in Narraville, Jade Langenhoven and Sergio Pamplin , who will be heading to Port Elizabeth, and Alonso Stramis, who will attend the Rhino Academy week in Johannesburg.
The Grant Khomo week is set to take place from 17 - 21 June 2024 and the Rhino Academy Week from 24 - 29 June 2024.
Karl Cookson, has been the rugby coach for De Duine over 10 years and has groomed the three boys since a young age, "All three boys began playing rugby at a young age during their primary school years and are now eager to advance their goals to a new level", Cookson mentioned.
Furthermore they added that it is no surprise that they were selected, “Discipline and hard work brought these boys to where they are today. I am proud and confident that they will give their best."
Lovina Plato who saw a potential in the three boys, posted on her Facebook account seeking sponsorship assistance due to financial constraints.
Plato, who understands the financial burden of such opportunities as her sons were also selected for international rugby, is calling on the community and private organizations to help these boys achieve their dreams.
“I know how it feels to be in that position as a parent, my sons were also once selected to go play rugby abroad and it can be very overwhelming when it comes to finances."
“The goal is to secure funds for all three boys, and the funds will be split among them”, Plato added.
Melanie Langenhoven, mother to Jade Langenhoven is working closely with Lovina Plato to raise funds for the other two boys.
Anyone who is willing to assist these boys are welcome to contact Lovina Plato at 264 81 126 9165.
