Impact Events and Promotions (IEP) is organising an ultra marathon in support of the Tierschutzverein Swakopmund (SPCA) on 25 May.

The starting point and finish line will be at Mile 4 Caravan Park. Nictus, Pupkewitz Nissan Swakopmund, and Swakop Electrical Supplies are already onboard as sponsors.

Ingrid Gürtel, the manager of Tierschutzverein Swakopmund, wholeheartedly welcomed the initiative.

“It is a great opportunity to create awareness about the Tierschutzverein Swakopmund, and we are challenging the whole community to get involved. Participants in the 8km Fun Walk who do not have dogs can gladly make a turn and take one of our dogs along.”

The facility at No. 38 Windhuker Street accommodates 48 dogs and 50 cats.

“The animals need blankets with winter approaching, dog pellets, and cat (tinned) food. The account for the vet is usually very high and can be anything between N$10 000 and N$20 000 per month.

“We also have to do a pest control exercise four times a year and need to dip the animals. This service is also available to the public,” Gürtel explained.

Sonata de Klerk, the spokesperson for IEP, said that the organisers are motivated by the huge need for funds and support for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

“The animals need to be fed, they need medical care, and to be looked after. These are continuous expenses.”

She added that the goal is also to provide an opportunity for Namibian long-distance athletes to showcase their talents while supporting a worthy cause.

“The aim is to have at least 700 participants. There will be special accommodation packages available for athletes from outside the coastal area.”

The prize money will be determined for the top three athletes from each category, and there will also be various lucky draws.

Entries can be done at the Mile 4 Rest Camp office, via WhatsApp at 081 343 6660, or by email at [email protected].
