Sunshine Centre to host Special Athletics
The Walvis Bay Child and Family Centre, more commonly known as the Sunshine Centre, will be hosting its third annual special athletics event with the Athletics Development Club on Saturday at Duneside High School.
The Sunshine Centre, a non-profit organisation, caters to more than 100 children and youth with various mental and physical disabilities. It is also home to an urban gardening project, a bakery, an industrial kitchen, and a woodworking workshop.
The centre’s director, Luzelle Lestrade, said that all 107 learners of the school will be competing in an event on the day.
“Whether it’s a child with cerebral palsy, an intellectual disability, Down syndrome, or a para-athlete, all will be competing in the various track and field events,” she said.
She added that it’s going to be a day of great fun.
“This is the second year that we are hosting the athletics in partnership with the Athletics Development Club, and for this, we are extremely grateful.
“We are looking forward to and hoping that the hosting of the Special Athletics will spread to the rest of the region; we are busy with plans for it.”
Lestrade stated that the Special Athletics are hosted for the empowerment and development of their children.
“We know how important sport is in the development of a child, and many times, children with disabilities are left out.
“Thus, this is an opportunity for them to show what their talents are. Through events like these, some of these children are invited to participate in events such as the Pupkewitz Foundation Athletics and the Special Olympics.”
In addition, Desert View Private School will be selling food, snacks, and drinks on the day.
“All proceeds will go towards Justin Koch, a teenager with cerebral palsy, to help fund his envisioned stem cell surgery.”
The festivities for the day will kick off at 09:00 and conclude around 15:00.
“We are calling on our community to come and support the Walvis Bay Child and Family Centre.”
