Swakopmunds youngest brass player, Luiz Alfonzo Ochs is already making waves in the world of brass music, emerging as one of the youngest and most talented trumpet players in Namibia. Born on 31 December 2011, in Windhoek, Ochs’ journey into music began early under the guidance of his grandfather, who himself is the Music Director of the Swakopmund Brass Group.

Being raised by his grandparents in Swakopmund, he had easy access to brass instruments from a young age. His interest in music became evident when he would eagerly pick up the trumpet and blow as hard as he could, occasionally interrupting his grandfather's teaching sessions. However, it wasn't until 2020, at the age of eight, when he formally began his music education journey.

"When I started school, my grandfather purposefully waited until I had lost my milk teeth and reached grade three before introducing me to brass training classes," he shared. Despite disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which temporarily stopped formal music classes, Ochs continued to practice at home diligently.

Early Beginnings

His talent quickly became apparent during a summit in Otjiwarongo in June 2021, where he impressed everyone with a solo performance, setting the stage for his fast development as a musician. During June 2023, at just 11 years old, Ochs had become a well-developed trumpet player, recognized for his skill and passion.

One of his proudest moments came from when he performed "Jesus Man of Joy" alongside a piano at the age of nine, as part of preparations for the 40th anniversary of the German-Namibian Development Association. This opportunity not only showcased his musical ability but also highlighted his dedication and maturity beyond his years.

"I like to play and make people happy with the sound of brass music," he mentioned. "Being part of a brass band has given me the exposure in society that I value."

International Recognition

Ochs’ achievements extend beyond Namibia where he recently made history as the youngest brass player to tour Germany with his band, receiving praises and admiration wherever they performed. Audiences were blown away and impressed by his talent and stage presence, and hinted towards a promising future in music.

Despite his growing musical career, he remains committed to his education, balancing schoolwork with weekend and holiday brass practice. He enjoys playing soccer and spending time with friends.

Future Aspirations

Ochs envisions a future where he continues his grandfather's legacy, both in music and in life. "I am very happy that I am raised by my grandfather with love," Luiz shared gratefully. "He has taught me many things, from driving a car at the age of 11 to playing musical instruments."

As Ochs continues to grow and excel, his journey stands as an inspiring testament to the power of passion, dedication, and the nurturing support of family. Possessing an infectious enthusiasm and remarkable talent, Ochs is set to inspire many others in his musical journey.

Family Support and Influence

Ochs’ parents, Walter Ursala Awases and Duurdt Ochs, reflect proudly on their son's achievements. "From a young age, Luiz showed a keen interest in music," says Awases. "We are grateful for the guidance of his grandparents, especially his grandfather's influence in nurturing his talent."

Duurdt added, "Luiz's commitment to his music and his studies is commendable. He manages his time effectively, ensuring that he excels in both areas. We are excited to see where his passion for music takes him in the future."

The Swakopmund Brass Group, under the leadership of Friedemann //Awases, Ochs’ grandfather, is equally enthusiastic about his progress. "The boy has brought a fresh energy and enthusiasm to our group," remarked the group's director. "His dedication and natural talent is truly remarkable for someone his age."

In addition to his musical pursuits, Ochs is actively involved in community activities. He participates in local events where he shares his love for music with others, often inspiring younger children to explore their own musical interests.

He hopes to continue refining his skills as a trumpeter, exploring new genres and expanding his musical horizons. "I want to continue learning and growing as a musician," he said. "One day, I hope to perform on even bigger stages and share my music with audiences around the world."

As he continues to captivate audiences with his performances, Ochs remains grounded in his roots. He attaches much of his success to the unwavering support of his family and the opportunities provided by his community. "I am fortunate to have such supportive grandparents and parents, they have encouraged me every step of the way." he acknowledged.

Indeed, Luiz Alfonzo Ochs's journey is not just about musical talent, it's a story of passion, perseverance, and the power of family love. As he looks ahead to the future, one thing is certain Ochs journey will continue to rise, shining brightly in the world of music and beyond.
