Celebrating our blue planet
The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, together with the municipality of Walvis Bay, has agreed to host World Ocean Day from June 7 to 8 at Independence Beach
The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, together with the municipality of Walvis Bay, will be hosting the World Ocean Day celebrations from 7 - 8 June 2024 at Independence Beach. The event, held under the theme “Ocean Climate Action,” aims to raise awareness about the importance of oceans and marine life.
The event, celebrated internationally on 08 June annually, seeks to promote ocean conservation efforts and encourage sustainable management of marine resources.
Derek Klazen, Minister of Fisheries, emphasized the day's significance, stating, that it aims to promote marine conservation efforts and encourage sustainable management of marine resources, “this is to inspire all individuals and communities worldwide to take action in protecting marine life”.
Klazen further noted that World Ocean Day focuses on a specific theme each year to highlight key ocean issues and promote meaningful action. “We have decided to make World Ocean Day a major event every second year, which will be opened by the President of Namibia, Dr. Nangolo Mbumba”.
Anita Kaihiva, Public Relations and Customer Service representative of the municipality of Walvis Bay explained why the event is to be held in Walvis Bay, “Walvis Bay is home to Namibia’s Port Management Company (Namport), which serves as a gateway port for Southern Africa’s landlocked countries”.
“It also hosts the largest percentage of Namibia’s fishing sector. Therefore, many residents rely on the ocean for their livelihood and recognize the importance of this event." Kaihiva added.
Leading up to the official celebrations, Coastal Biodiversity Week kicked off with a World Environment Day at Narraville Secondary today, followed by a clean-up campaign on Thursday at Independence Beach from 09:00. Alongside the official celebrations, the municipality invites all entrepreneurs to apply to trade at the event at no cost.
Available categories include four seafood stalls and beverage stands, four traditional food stalls and beverage stands, and two kapana and beverage stands. Application forms can be obtained from the Economic Development Office (No. 158) at the Head Office, Civic Centre, or at the Kuisebmond Municipal Office (Office No. 40). Applicants must attach a certified copy of their identity document.
In conclusion of the week-long activities, there will also be a sports day at Independence Beach.
