Walvis Bay Maritime Week resounding success

The official opening of Walvis Bay Maritime Week and the final round of the NAMPORT National Debate Championships took place on 3 October in Walvis Bay.

The Walvis Bay Maritime Week, a collaboration between the Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) and the Municipality of Walvis Bay ensured a string of various activities over the week.

Aside from the official opening graced by John Mutorwa, Prime Minister and the Minister of Works and Transport, the National Debate Championships were crowned, community members had the opportunity to visit various stalls, a seafood cook-off competition, a sports competition and a parade made up the Walvis Bay Maritime Week.

Mutorwa, who was the main speaker at the official opening ceremony emphasised the importance of aligning Namibia's maritime sector with global standards and frameworks.

"Namibia's membership in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) underscores our dedication to ensuring safe, secure, and environmentally sustainable systems in our maritime industry. The IMO's regulations guide us as we modernize our maritime industry."

"By adhering to these global standards, we not only protect our oceans and coastlines but also position Namibia as a responsible and forward-looking maritime nation," Mutorwa added.

He further emphasized that participation in international efforts highlights Namibia's readiness to lead in both regional and global maritime affairs.

"As we look ahead, our vision is clear: Namibia must have the transportation infrastructure that befits a nation of ambition and vision. Our transportation policy is not just about roads, rails, and ports. It is about building pathways to prosperity for all Namibians."

Theresia Goagoses, speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education, stated that Walvis Bay Maritime Week serves as an excellent platform for positive discourse between the maritime sector and the youth. "By engaging with young Namibians, we can cultivate interest and passion for careers in this field."

Additionally, Goagoses highlighted that the event not only celebrates the achievements of the debaters but also nurtures future leaders. "The debate serves as a platform for our learners to engage with critical issues, explore innovative solutions, and develop the skills to thrive in vital sectors."

The motion set for the debaters was: Prioritize investing in the training and education of Namibia’s maritime workforce to meet global standards.

After rounds of presenting points and rebuttals, the Oshana Region was announced as the winner, walking away with N$500,000. The Oshikoto Region was the runner-up, receiving N$250,000, and the Erongo Region came in third.

Selma Kayawala from the Erongo Region was announced as the best female debater overall, while Junias Iipinge was named the best male debater. Both received N$3,000 each.
