Police detain suspects in connection with Sheehama Matheus's disappearance
The Namibian Police say new information has come to light in the missing person's investigation of Sheehama Matheus (24), who witnesses said was seen being assaulted by a group of about six individuals before he disappeared without a trace.
Matheus was last seen on Saturday, 27 July, in Walvis Bay.
Police Chief Inspector Ileni Shapumba said Matheus said the police have opened a case of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
"The alleged assault took place on Saturday, 27 July, between 20:00 and 23:00 at a house in Opaal Street, in the Tutaleni location. According to reports, Matheus and his girlfriend were attending a gathering at her residence when he was accused of slapping her brother," Shapumba said.
"The accusation led to an attack on Matheus by the brother's friends, who allegedly assaulted him severely," Shapumba added.
The police have made arrests in connection with the assault. Four suspects, namely, Jimmy Gaeb (24) Marvin Wapota (20), Romano Paulus (20) and Enrico Gomachab (20) have been detained.
The suspects have made their first appearance at the Walvis Bay Magistrates Court.
The case was postponed to 22 August, with the suspects remaining in custody without bail.
A fifth suspect, also 24 years old, was arrested yesterday and is scheduled to appear in court today.
Family and friends of Sheehama Matheus, along with community members, are expected to march at the Walvis Bay Magistrate's Court today.
