Chairman Mao Zedong celebrates star students

Elria Thekwane
On 8 February, Chairman Mao Zedong High School held their prize-giving ceremony with the aim of motivating learners and teachers to keep striving for excellence, just like their motto has always preached.

This crucial and special event was held to make learners feel that their hard work is valued, to show approval and gratitude for each learner’s good job and to make them aware that hard work will be rewarded.

The keynote speaker for the event, Mr Muunda, said: “Succeeding in life is as simple as being a good student. All you have to do is pay attention, work hard and give it your best shot.“

The first awards that were announced were the sport awards, in which the sport woman and man of the year for 2023 were Timosha Marujuana and Eustace Springbok, respectively.

Among the awards for top academic achievements, grade nine learners Sakeus Sinyemba, Anna Indongo, and Beverly were announced as the top three performers.

The top three great 10 learners were Kaylin van Wyk, Tanisha Slinger, and Isiah Ugburo.

Special awards were handed out for outstanding performances.

One of these outstanding performances was a 100% score in mathematics, as achieved by Grace Haimbodi. The overall best performer for the year 2023 was awarded to Kovii Kambai.

Teachers were also recognised for the achievements of their students.

Mrs Bulu Sakaria received an award for her work in English class.

During the award ceremony, the joy of the learners was evident.

A learner quoted Vince Lombardi when he said, “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up.”

At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, school principal Mrs Kanyanda said: "Whatever our students have achieved so far would never have been possible without God. Dedication is the key to a successful life.”

The ceremony was indeed a motivation for all learners and teachers of Chairman Mao Zedong.
