In a celebration of academic excellence, St Paul’s College proudly announced the remarkable achievement of one of its own, Oleksandra Makarenko, in the June 2023 Cambridge International Education examination series.

She clinched the prestigious Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award for her exceptional performance, securing the highest mark worldwide in the Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics examinations.

This victory not only underscores Makarenko's brilliance, but also highlights the school's dedication to nurturing academic talent. Principal Iain Guthrie expressed immense pride in Makarenko’s 100% score in mathematics and her distinction as the top scorer globally, attributing this success to both the learner's commitment and the diligent efforts of the school's teaching staff.

Her journey to academic triumph is one that resonates deeply with the ethos of St Paul’s College. Having relocated from Ukraine to Namibia in 2015, Makarenko embraced her new identity as a proud Namibian resident. Since joining St Paul’s College in 2021, she has exemplified resilience and dedication, culminating in this extraordinary achievement. In a display of recognition, she was honoured with her award during a morning school assembly. This moment not only symbolises her personal triumph, but also serves as an inspiration to her peers and educators alike.

Tafadzwa Moyo, schools development manager (sub-Saharan Africa) for international education at Cambridge, extended heartfelt congratulations to Makarenko and the staff at St Paul’s College. He emphasised the significance of her Cambridge qualifications in preparing her for future endeavours, affirming her readiness to seize the diverse opportunities that lie ahead.

Looking ahead, St Paul’s College is positioned to continue its tradition of excellence, as it prepares to introduce A-Level Cambridge international examinations from 2025. This expansion reflects the college's unwavering dedication to academic advancement and its commitment to equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in an ever-changing world.

Makarenko's remarkable achievement not only elevates her academic excellence, but also underscores the transformative power of education. As St Paul’s College continues to nurture the next generation of leaders and innovators, her journey serves as testament to the limitless potential that lies within every learner.
