Star Teacher

Principal of Concordia Mary Uanguta
1. Why did you become a teacher?

Initially, I wanted to become a doctor because of the passion I have to help people, but when I could not get an entry in medicine, I opted to do teaching because that way, I believed, I would still make a difference in the learners’ lives.

2. What motivates you every morning to get up and go to work?

What motivates me to get up every morning to go to work is the joy of knowing and believing that somewhere somehow there is a child or learner that will need me at the school, and my presence will be a blessing to him or her.

3. Tell us about your challenges and how you overcome them daily.

Well, my challenges are many and cannot be quantified. If I mention them one by one, they will cover a lot of pages. Nevertheless, being in a school set up and being the principal, I encounter challenges from learners, teachers as well as parents. To overcome them, taking my experience in the education fraternity and exposure into consideration, I remain calm; take time to ponder on the issue before making a decision. I am also a firm believer in prayer and asking God for guidance and wisdom; it helps me a lot.

4. What is one of the biggest lessons you have learned from your learners?

Don't undermine the minds of learners, they can teach you a lot, even if you are the teacher.

5. Tell us about your talents and what you are passionate about?

Not to brag, but I am gifted in many areas. I can do a lot of things if I apply my mind to it as whatever I do, I do it with diligence, passion, and commitment. I love helping others. I believe in unconditional love and care for all. I am a motivational speaker that loves dancing, sports, and writing. l love influencing others to change and become better; if possible, be the excellent version of themselves in all areas.

6. What is your favourite book, song, or place to visit in Namibia, as well as your dream car?

My favourite book is ‘Love Like You've Never Been Hurt: Hope, Healing and the Power of an Open Heart’ by Cherise Franklin & Jentezen Franklin.

I love gospel songs and I mostly listen to any type of gospel song.

I love nature, especially where the terrain is green. Etosha or lodges that have such environments are my favourite.

My dream car, hmmm... Lexus SUVs.

7. Can you tell us more about your teaching journey?

I started teaching at Centaurus High School in 1997, immediately after completing university. I have more than 20 years of experience in the education fraternity. Throughout my journey in education, I learned a lot and I held positions ranging from Subject Head, Sports Coordinator, Conservation Project Coordinator, National Exams Setters member, Head of Department (HoD), and now Principal.
