Nandi-Ndaitwah urges farmers to work the land

Kenya Kambowe
Swapo Party presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 national elections, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has called upon farmers to work hard on their land as better rains are anticipated this season.

Namibia should not be a country of beggars and hungry people, she added.

Speaking at a party rally in Nkurenkuru over the weekend, Nandi-Ndaitwah urged for green schemes across the country to be utilised to their full potential, adding that food security is very important for any country.

“In anticipation for better rains in the coming season, government has prepared to strengthen support to farmers with farming equipment and through government subsidies, particularly those depending on rain-fed farming,” she said.

“I urge all farmers, big or small, to work hard when opportunity comes to ensure food security at household level."

Transform lives

“In the Kavango West Region, projects such as Musese and Sikondo green schemes present great and unlimited potential to transform many lives through employment creation and increased economic activities,” she said.

“Food security is an important component of any development and that is why it is critical for the green schemes - not only here Kavango West, but across Namibia - to operate at full scale.

“With value addition almost at every stage, agriculture has countless opportunities - from production through to processing and packaging, opportunities abound.”

Nandi-Ndaitwah also encouraged farmers to consider value addition as a means of diversification.

“In fact, we must make it a point that every household that has access to reasonable water must have a certain level of food security. That means you must be able to supply yourself with fresh produce,” she said.

Drought relief

On last season’s poor rainy season and the persistent drought in some parts of the country, she said government will assist those affected.

“The government is ready to provide drought relief food to the affected communities throughout the country,” she said.
