Veteran Namibian artist and activist Nicky Marais opened her latest exhibition, ‘Bearings’, on Thursday, 30 May, at the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN). Officially inaugurated by multidisciplinary artist Ndinomholo Ndilula, the exhibition showcases a stunning array of large and small-scale paintings on canvas produced in 2023 and 2024. The exhibition will run until Saturday, 6 July.

Marais drew inspiration for ‘Bearings’ from her recent relocation to Oranjemund in the far south of Namibia, where the Orange River meets the sea. Reflecting on her new environment, she shared: “I now live on the edge of the desert and from the windows of my new painting studio, I stare out into the southern Namib sun sea.” This dramatic landscape influenced her creative process as she adjusted to her new surroundings.

The title ‘Bearings’ reflects Marais’ journey of establishing herself in Oranjemund. “When you get to a new place, you have to anchor yourself between two points,” she said. This concept of finding stability and orientation in a new environment is central to the works on display.

In addition to the exhibition, Marais will host an art talk event at the NAGN on Saturday, 8 June. During this event, she will provide insights into the creation of the paintings featured in ‘Bearings’, offering attendees a deeper understanding of her artistic process and the themes that drive her work.

‘Bearings’ represents a significant chapter in Marais’ artistic journey, capturing the essence of her new life and the expansive, inspiring landscapes of southern Namibia. Namibian Sun was at the official opening of the exhibition and captured these moments.
