Distorted history
SAPIENS WRITES:
In a conflict or war, there are always three sides as to the cause and fight: one side, the other side, and the truth.
War is the result of a failure of diplomacy or negotiation, if any.
The first victim is the truth. Propaganda is not the objective truth; it is the justification for your actions.
The 1904-1908 Herero/Nama uprising had three parties involved. The Herero/Nama, the German administration, and the British.
The British encouraged and gave logistical support to the uprising through the Betjuanaland protectorate, the Cape Colony, and Walvis Bay (part of the Cape Colony).
This support was linked to the exhausting Anglo-Boer War, from 1899-1902, between the Z.A.R. of Paul Kruger and the Victorean British Empire, and the issue was gold and the Uitlander vote.
The German Kaiser supplied Paul Kruger with Krupp artillery and Mauser weapons. The conventional war was over in six months, but then followed two years of scorched earth guerrilla war. Farms were burned down, and women and children were put in concentration camps with poor hygiene and nutrition. 27 000 women and children died. This was the first genocide of the 20th century!
Emily Hobhouse recorded the fate of this collateral damage.
The British supplied the Nama/Herero with 0.303 Lee/Enfield rifles made by the British and provided safe havens during the conflict. This was revenge for the Kaisers’ support for Paul Kruger.
In an unconventional war, there are no fronts, and in waging this war, collateral civilian damage is huge.
The Anglo-Boer war and the Nama/Herero uprising left deep scars in southern Africa. This also contributed to the rise of apartheid through a Laager mentality.
History is rarely objective; it is written by the victors. The British legacy in North America, Palestine, Australia, New Zealand, and India reflects abuse or power.
In the negotiations for compensation with Germany, the British must also be involved. They supplied weapons to the combatants. It is hypocritical to have selective amnesia for one’s actions.
