Equality is a quest

THINKING MAN WRITES:

In 1789, during the French Revolution, the slogan was for liberty (choice), equality (opportunity) and brotherhood (Ubuntu, Harambee).

Heads literally rolled. Blood watered their freedom, the blood of the oppressive, entitled royalty.

In Southern Africa, the gap/divide between have and have-nots (the Gini coefficient), has not improved significantly, since liberation and independence. The old establishment was replaced by a new, exclusive elite.

BBBEE (Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment) and affirmative action, as well as NEEEF was limited to narrow based, comrade, connected and often corrupt commissioners of crime (Fishrot is an example). From lip service (manifesto promises), votes and power, the progress often led to self-service and feathering one’s own nest – my time to eat has come!

Ministers who in 1990 had an official Toyota Camry, now need a bigger Mercedes Benz, to fit in. They are the Bwana Wabenzis. In the meantime, fifty percent of the voters, who trusted them, are unemployed and live in shacks, near shebeens to drown their sorrows. A Luta Continua – for socio-economic liberation.

What happened to democratic concept of power of, for, to and with the people?

The National Assembly should represent the servants of the people, for the common good. It should be accountable, transparent and honourable. It should connect with grass root needs.

Nobody is born with a passport of equality. You cannot choose your parents (biological). They choose you for better or worse. An orgasm, ejaculation and then withdrawal after fertilization, without commitment of maintenance is a form of gender based violence – leaving a woman without support. A Basic Income Grant, once introduced, should only be given to young mothers with contraceptive counselling.

A seed needs soil, compost, water, sun, an insect to flower, fruit and grow.

A child needs TLC (Tender Loving Care) to reach its full potential. In needs antenatal care, birth, breast feeding, weaning, food security, education, health and trust. Its name is Tomorrow. A child becomes the product of its environmental and emotional exposure from family, friends, teachers, pastor, media, sport and role models.

Individuality is a fact. Equality is a quest, to make use of your opportunities, to grow, despite an often uneven playing field. Where there is a will, there is a way, by the Grace of God, the Mercy of Jesus Christ and the blessing of the holy spirit.

By the time you become 18 years old, your values prepare you to face the challenges of life, and vote for a better future. If you are born a “mistake”, odds are against you.
