No Sugar Tax Renal Failure!
SAPIENS WRITES:
Sugar is not an essential foodstuff for poor people. It is an addictive “poison”. It is the number one addiction worldwide. It is linked to commercial Afro-American slavery of the 19th Century. There was no “sugar” in Africa or Namibia, before colonialism, tobacco, alcohol (fermented sugar/carbs) and sugar were bartering tools, in the era of exploration and exploitation.
Sugar may give you a short term go, but long term abuse, results in your health grinding to a halt. You become obese, diabetic and hypertensive, with target organ damage, e.g. renal failure.
Sugar is an appetite stimulant. You become hungry and obese, and with salt, you become thirsty. You need a recharge every three hours, and your organs fade - kidney, heart, brain liver, limbs etc. you need multiple pills to control the damage and cost.
If you can’t see your toes or tie your shoe laces, you won’t see Vision 2030, in health. Your belly circumference should be half your height.
About four years ago, the previous Minister of Finance, announced 15% VAT, on zero taxed sugar. This was reversed by the powerful Minister of Health, as the party may lose votes! Four years later, a state of the art Renal Failure Dialysis Unit, was opened in Katutura Intermediate Hospital, by the same Minister!
Renal failure from sugar, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and infection, contributes at least one third to kidney failure cases. This is a failure of promotion/prevention of Primary Health Care. It involves three dialysis sessions per week, or a rental transplant. All are very expensive and disruptive.
We don’t need a Boswell/Wilkie sugar cube circus reward for performance policy, in order to capture votes from ignorant gullible people.
We live in the fourth industrial revolution. We have evidence based science, and can measure cause and effect. We must not confuse taste and comfort with real nutrition. We need farm to fork, unprocessed unrefined nutrition. The best medicine is real food, with movement of mind and body, with productivity.
Health is “Wealth”.
