QEII – Gold Medal for Public Service
ANDREAS OBHOLZER WRITES:
The passing of an iconic legend kindled fond memories.
In 1991, after Independence, my wife and I, were honoured and privileged to be invited to a Gala Dinner at Old State House. The Founding Father, was the host and Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, the guests of honour. Namibia became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Her seventy years of dedicated selfless service, after WWII involved the devolution of a fading colonial empire, and the transition to an equal commonwealth of nations. She worked with countless Prime Ministers, through the House of Commons and the House of Lords. It was democracy with a royal seal of approval. She performed her functions with dedication and distinction. An unrivalled sense of duty, integrity, ability, humility, decency, dignity, civility, composure, character and charisma. She was a benevolent humane matriarch.
She was always well informed, met Prime Ministers weekly, but as apolitical. She had insight and oversight. She was reserved and a good listener. She called Nelson by his name and he, Madiba, called her Elizabeth. There was a mutual bond of respect and friendship.
The monarch has a bridge building function, even today, of a national identity and beyond. It is apolitical. We share this place, we all belong. King Charles, has a great role model, to follow in deep steps. Let’s Ubuntu/Harambee for a peaceful prosperous Vision 2030.
