Real men marry or pay maintenance
ANDREAS OBHOLZER WRITES:
According to the Constitution, men and women have equal status in Namibia.
However, at ground level this does not appear to be the case. Why would we otherwise need a Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare?
In Genesis, there was first Adam and then Eve, from his rib, as a “suitable helper”. It was Adam (No 1) and then Eve (No 2).
In our Constitution, it is Adam and Eve as equal partners in a family context. The Old Testament was recorded by men. Even today, the Roman Catholic Church is male dominated. There has never been a female Pope.
Against this background, men perceive themselves as more equal. In the social pecking order, women strive for upliftment and to assist in properly caring for their children.
Ignorance, poverty and disease is still a major challenge to many Namibians. Fifty percent are under- or unemployed, live in shacks, don’t finish school, have no special skills, suffer from food insecurity, waste precious money in shebeens and don’t marry when they have children (mother’s surname).
A stable family, with role model values, is the cornerstone for development of the children for Vision 2030 – prosperity, security, democracy and peace.
Real men marry or pay maintenance. They take on caretaker responsibility for their women and children. Unfortunately, there are too few of that caliber in Namibia. As a result, the future is handicapped for many youths.
If a Basic Income Grand (BIG) becomes affordable reality, it should be reserved for single mothers with capacity for “family” spacing.
Men have to live up to their responsibility and be accountable. Namibia is not a fundamentalist Taliban State.
