Statements for political points
SEPO ORGANISATION WRITES:
It’s very disheartening and painful to learn the extent to which political leaders will go in order to tell lies just to win people’s (the electorates) trust. The poorest of the poor, the hopeless and most destitute previously disadvantaged black Namibians put so much hope and trust in the lies of politicians.
Recently in April president Hage Geingob made one such bold political statement, telling people that with the envisaged green hydrogen project people from the ||Karas region cannot remain poor. In the president’s own words this is what he said, “there’s diamonds here, these people are poor. We cannot have green hydrogen and people are still poor”.
This is the same man who during his term as Namibia’s first prime minister publicly stated that for a population size of 1,4 million people (the early 90’s) every Namibian can enjoy a better life considering the country’s wealth.
The current governor of the ||Karas region, Aletha Fredericks, back in 2020 (The Namibian Newspaper, Friday 7 August 2020) during her maiden state of the region address at Keetmanshoop talked about no more exploiting ||Karas region. Also, in her own words she stated, “our region is a high-end profitable tax-generating area, which predominantly comes from diamond mining for the central government”.
Politicians never have and continue not to do enough to bring about genuine transformation in the social and economic lives of the citizens.
The official opposition in the form of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) only goes around bad-mouthing Swapo for apparently having messed- up things. On the other hand, we have the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) a grassroots political party who seems very promising. But even with them it seems like more talk and fewer action.
Imagine Keetmanshoop residents’ municipal issues are now becoming more prevalent. Some settlements in the region are going without water for months and no one including Swapo, PDM and LPM seems to care. Water is a basic commodity which any responsible political office must prioritize as an everyday need which must be provided and be available to all citizens. There are pensioners, disabled people, school going children, women and subsistence farmers who are experiencing serious water shortages.
Other political stakeholders like the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), Affirmative Repositioning Movement (AR), National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) and South West Africa National Party (Swanu) seems to prioritize their own political interest instead of offering better solutions to the nation and its citizens.
