Sugar for votes!
SAPIENS WRITES:
In Namibia, sugar is zero tax rated – no disincentive tax (damage) and zero VAT.
Last week, we had World Diabetes Day (Suikersiekte). Of the eight billion people on earth, we have ten percent with Diabetes (800 million) and obesity.
Sugar was not indigenous to Namibia, before colonialism – it is the legacy of Afro-American slavery. It was used, as an addictive bartering tool, with tobacco, alcohol (fermented sugar) weapons, textiles, pots & pans to trade items of unequal value (exploitation).
Sugar is not produced in Namibia. It is imported from South Africa and Brazil. It is the number one addiction worldwide. Sugar abuse, without warning, results in massive collateral damage, the metabolic syndrome, obesity, hypertension and diabetes.
Your small blood vessels become inflamed, thick and narrow, resulting in load, energy and oxygen shedding. The long term target organ damage – blindness, stroke, Alzheimer’s, heart attack/failure, reflux/snoring, fatty liver, renal failure, amputations, cancers, impotence, dental caries, infections, resulting in early death.
Diabetes is 80 percent reversible. Sugar is an addictive appetite stimulant, requiring a recharge every three hours. Sugar does not let you go, if abused. Your health grinds to a halt, with multiorgan failure. The coffins of diabetes are bigger and stronger, to cope with the size of the body.
Since Independence, despite overwhelming evidence of sugar generated damage, there is no public warning, like with smoking and alcohol and zero tax.
The poor are “encouraged” to eat sugar. The damage is slow, progressive and relentless. Sugar is the “cocaine” for the poor masses – sweet destruction.
The MoHSS and the medical aids are overwhelmed by the recurrent costs of complications/morbidity, reduced productivity and medical disability in Namibia.
The members of the NA/NC, must debate this pandemic issue and become role models for the voters they serve. Bad compound habits are cumulative and bad for the welfare of Namibia.
Don’t think about votes, now, but think about a healthy, happy, productive Vision 2030.
Politicians should serve for the common good and not become sugar daddies with sweet empty promises.
