KELLY MORLAND WRITES:

My sister Gail Morland recently, on the 6th of April 2022 went to Dr Brandt at Windhoek Eye Centre as she had been experiencing terrible headaches for months and she also started developing blurred vision.

He took a look at her and realised that there was major pressure behind her eye. He then sent her to get an MRI as quickly as possible.

Well, I do not know whether you know, but the MRI machines are inundated with patients and to get such a scan you may wait for days or even weeks. However, Medical Imaging at Medi Clinic said that she could go in at 13h00 on 8 April 2022 (a Friday). They did the scan and immediately realised that there was a major issue.

At just before 15h00 that day Dr Brandt contacted me to tell me to take my sister to the emergency room immediately. Dr Brandt had spoken with Dr Jario (our very own home-grown neurosurgeon) and they agreed that she was to be taken into the ICU immediately at Lady Pohamba Private Hospital (LPPH). She was admitted to the emergency room and vitals where taken. Dr Jario had already given orders to the hospital staff to take her to the ICU and to start her on medication as he was in theatre at that stage.

After a long day in theatre, Dr Jario had a look at my sister's MRI and went to her bed side, where he explained to her that she had a large meningioma (tumor) behind her right eye which could cause a catastrophic seizure at any minute.

They had her on anti-seizure medication and he said that they would have to operate to remove the tumor sooner rather than later. He also requested that her husband and us, as her family, be at the hospital at 8h00 the next morning, in order to explain what is happening and what needs to happen.

He came prepared with slide shows and a brain in a skull model to explain everything to non-doctors.

Letting someone dig around in your sister’s brain is a major decision. So, he gave us time to make a decision and it was an obvious one.

Dr Jario would have to do the surgery. He booked the theatre and arranged all the staff he needed. He also arranged Dr Mouton, a brilliant anaesthesiologist and on Sunday 10 April 2022 at just before 9h00 my sister was rolled into theatre for a nine hour long long surgery.

The wait was long, and it drained us all. However, the surgery was a success.

The tumor was removed, and she was awake after surgery. She was giving me orders of what I had to do and where to look for everything.

She went home on the Saturday after her surgery, and she is recovering very well.

All thanks to Dr Brandt from Windhoek Eye Centre, Medical Imaging Medi Clinic, the staff at Lady Pohamba Private Hospital, Dr Mouton and the man of the hour, Dr Jario.

We could not have gotten through this whole story without the fast actions of all of the people mentioned above. We truly appreciate each and every one of you.
