Vaccination by persuasion of mandate

DR. A. OBHOLZER WRITES:

In a democratic State, choice by persuasion is the preferred option.

The EPI (Extended Programme of Immunization) is the cornerstone of Primary Health Care, for pre-school children. It is the gold standard.

In veterinary medicine, certain vaccinations are mandatory in order to access the market for beef.

The “red line” to prevent the spread of lung sickness and foot and mouth disease, runs in the north west, from the skeleton coast, through Namibia and through Botswana. It is an economical market prerequisite to access the EU market.

Failure to reach eighty percent herd immunity for Covid-19 has a major impact on our economy, especially tourism.

Our democratic neighbour, Botswana with an adult vaccination rate of 73 percent and a similar population size, has introduced a N$6 500 fine or 1 year in jail or both for anti-vaxers returning home. Booster doses are promoted. Truck drivers on the Trans Kalahari route must be vaccinated.

Austria in Europe has introduced mandatory vaccination for all.

I don’t have a bee in my bonnet, only evidence based common sense. Ninety percent of Covid-19 deaths were unvaccinated. Deadly fact!

The struggle against, ignorance, poverty and disease continue.

We have passed the fourth wave, with the milder Omicron variant, but our vaccination rate is only about thirty percent.

We live on borrowed time.

You don’t drive a car without a safety belt. You don’t do public service, business or sport without a vaccination.

You don’t drink and drive.

You choose to live.

You have an Ubuntu / Harambee duty and responsibility to be vaccinated for your benefit, your family’s benefit and society.

Don’t become complacent. With the good rains and mosquitos, think of Malaria in the north, if you have fever and headache. Mosquitos travel by taxi to Windhoek and the coast. Be aware and take precautions. Information is knowledge, power of choice and security.
