Voter registration apathy

Mandy Rittmann
SAPIENS WRITES:

Namibia has three million people and 1,7 million eligible voters. Two (June/July) months were set aside for a new ten year voter card registration cycle.

To date, at the end June, only about a third of voters have new cards, despite the best reports and user friendly facilities of the Electoral Commission. Why?

Do Namibians wait and then rush to register in the last week or don’t they care?

Have they lost confidence that voting is a tool for democracy, and a better future. Democracy in action, is of, by, for and with the people in partnership.

What was promised in the past and what was delivered? Who benefits most, the elected servant politicians, or the voters, who put them there?

Many voters, especially the young, have lost faith in the system.

They see very little change for the better. They don’t register – protest!

This is a big mistake. Change comes slowly. You can vote for the party you used to trust, or you can vote for a party that asks difficult questions with proposals in the National Assembly.

It is your right, privilege, duty and responsibility to vote. If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.

As a pensioner, I have registered and intend to vote for a stable, better future, for my adult children and grandchildren.

We need to live the spirit of Ubuntu/Harambee. We are liberated, now we need Team Namibia first, and Party second.
