BW Kudu project seeks EIA study bidders

The BW Kudu gas-to-power transmission project, which has been repeatedly derailed, may see a new lease on life following an advertisement for bids for an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA).

According to the advertisement, BW Energy recognises the need to navigate the regulatory, environmental and market uncertainties within the Namibian and larger Southern African energy sectors - all factors that could have an impact on the project's timelines, investment recovery and profitability.

The project's gas field is situated in the northern Orange sub-basin, approximately 130 km off the south-west coast.

As advertised, BW Kudu Energy now seeks qualified environmental consultants to submit their interest to undertake an ESIA study.

BW Energy's Kudu - a subsidiary of BW Energy - serves as the project's main operator, in partnership with the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR), to utilise extracted natural gas for electricity generation.

BW Kudu's strategy for the Kudu Development Project includes revising the development plan to use a repurposed semi-submersible drilling rig as a Floating Production Unit, aiming to optimise project timelines and reduce capital and environmental costs. Once the gas is extracted, it will be transported to a power station that will be built to give Namibia energy independence while powering into the regional supply network.

The project study encompasses a 400 kV transmission line from Lüderitz to Rosh Pinah, which entails the extraction of natural gas from the offshore field from nearby offshore wells, as well as the onshore pipeline, power station, floating processing facility pipeline (collectively the upstream) to shore, and transmission line (collectively the downstream).

The core objective of the Kudu project is to reduce Namibia's reliance on imported power, while optimising project timelines and reducing capital and environmental costs.

The company plans to become an Independent Power Producer to supply competitive power to the African market while collaborating with the government and global oil majors for joint development, aiming to meet growing energy demands and support regional energy security.
